What is chronic respiratory disease?

Chronic respiratory diseases affect the airways and other parts of the lungs. They are life-threatening condition that often occurs due to airway obstruction. It can be progressive and may lead to death.

Classification of chronic respiratory disease

Types of chronic respiratory disease include;

  • Bronchial Asthma (BA)
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD)
  • Interstitial lung diseases (ILD)
  • Bronchiectasis
  • Malignancies
  • Occupational lung diseases
  • Obstructive sleep apnoea(OSA).

The two most common chronic respiratory diseases are asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). 

COPD is Progressive life threatening lung disease.

Asthma is a chronic lung disease affecting people of all ages. It is caused by inflammation and muscle tightening around the airways, which makes it harder to breathe.

Symptoms of COPD include;

  • Sputum production
  • Dyspnoea
  • Barrel chest
  • Expiratory wheezing
  • Hyper-resonant

Complications of chronic respiratory diseases

Complications of asthma include;

• Permanent narrowing of bronchial tubes
• Medication side effects
• Higher risk of obesity
• Sleep deprivation
• Difficulty in participating in exercise or sports

Complications of COPD;

• Respiratory infections such as colds, the flu, and pneumonia. 
• heart disease, including heart attack, heart failure 
•  lung cancer.
• pulmonary hypertension
• depression
