Statistics of NCD

Global statistics of NCD

NCDs are the main cause of death and disability globally. (WHO). NCDs kill 41 million people each year and account for 74% of all deaths globally.

• 17.9 million people die of heart disease every year
• 9.3 million cancer
• 8 million mental illness
• 4.1 million to chronic respiratory diseases
• 2 million to diabetes

17 million people die from an NCD before age 70 where 86% of these premature deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries.
77% are in low- and middle-income countries (WHO, 2022).

diabetes

In 2021, 537 million people live with diabetes. It is estimated to rise to 783m in 2045

cardiovascular disease

 In 2020, an estimated 523 million people had some form of CVD. 1.28 billion adults aged 30-79 years worldwide have hypertension with 2/3 live in low- and middle-income countries. (WHO)

Cancer

The most common types of cancer new cases in 2020 were:

• Breast (2.26 million cases)
• Lung (2.21 million cases)
• Colon and rectum (1.93 million cases)
• Prostate (1.41 million cases)
• Skin (non-melanoma) (1.20 million cases)
• Stomach (1.09 million cases)

chronic respiratory disease

According to the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2017, close to 545 million people in the world had a chronic respiratory disease in 2017. An increase of 39·8% since 1990. (Source)

mental disorders

In 2019, 1 in every 8 people, or 970 million people around the world were living with a mental disorder, with anxiety and depressive disorders the most common. In 2020, the number of people living with anxiety and depressive disorders rose significantly because of the COVID-19 pandemic. (WHO)

Sri Lankan statistics of NCD

In Sri Lanka, 83% of all deaths in 2018 were due to NCDs

diabetes

14.6% PLWD [Sri Lanka STEPS survey 2021]

hypertension

62% of Sri Lankan males and 48.1% of females suffer from high blood pressure [Sri Lanka STEPS survey 2021]

cardiovascular disease

14.2% of Sri Lankan’s aged between 40 -69 years have a >= 20% of 10 year CVD risk or currently have CVD [Sri Lanka STEPS survey 2021]

Cancer

In 2019 a total number of 31,848 patients were newly diagnosed with cancer, where 14,854 of them were men and 16,994 were women ( Cancer Incidence and Mortality Data Sri Lanka- 2019).

chronic respiratory disease

The prevalence of COPD in Sri Lanka is estimated at 10.5%. Unfortunately, due to lack of access to spirometry testing and the absence of community screening programs COPD is largely underdiagnosed in the country.

mental disorders

 In 2016, a total number of 3025 suicided cases of  were reported in Sri Lanka. During the 1st quarter of 2017, a total number of 13,103 cases were newly diagnosed with mental health disorders in Sri Lanka.
